How To Stay Motivated While Getting Fit And Losing Weight
It’s that time of year again. Well, it’s almost that time of year. You may be like many of us across the country, still stuck in the food coma that came upon you this holiday season, unable to recover. Hopefully, you found a balance between having fun and letting loose a bit and with keeping your personal fitness goals intact. While taking a break from a rigorous schedule is certainly important, all too often we see a cheat day turn into a cheat week. Then the cheat week becomes a month, and then a season. You wake up 50 lbs heavier, in a virtual daze over what has happened a year later.
And we aren’t trying to cause people unnecessary alarm here, either. In this post-Christmas, pre-New Year’s Day blog, we here at Genetics Training Facilities want to provide some folks looking for some inspiration to get going. Perhaps you find yourself in a position similar to the one described above – and you don’t know where to start.
Start A Journal
Whether you are joining a group gym in Corona, CA, or are not even concerned with losing weight at all, a key component of mental health and wellness can be found in daily writing. As it specifically applies to weight loss motivation, it will help you verbalize your goals, hopes, and fears as they are related to the process. Often times, we are unaware of what is hindering our progress. When you write every day, it helps set yourself up for success with routine. Discipline leads to more discipline, and can have a trickle-down, crossover effect in multiple areas of your life. For example, we talk to people who are happier in their relationships and with their performance at work, in large part due to their added focus and discipline that they are able to bring every day. Here at Genetics Training Facilities, we want our members to feel the impact of our strength training in a variety of ways!
Understand That A Setback Isn’t Synonymous With Failure
Akin to our point we made earlier, it’s easy to let small lapses become big problems. Cheat days become cheat weeks, and then months, and so on and so forth. But how does this happen? It’s usually your mind just messing with you, ironically, because you care too much. If you care so much about your new fitness plan, it’s quite possible that slipping up for a week might cause you emotional distress. We aren’t talking about some clinical state of distress, mind you, we just mean it can really, really bum people out if they aren’t able to tackle the obstacle they set out to. Being able to get up, dust yourself off, and get back on that horse again is what it takes to achieve long-term weight loss and fitness goals. Whether you are interested in group fitness classes in Riverside or body weight workouts in your home, don’t beat yourself up too much if you slip up. The term setback is not synonymous with failure.
Set Realistic Goals
Did you know that one of the strongest predictors of long-term weight loss has to do with setting appropriate goals at the beginning of your diet and fitness routine? Ann Kulze, MD, author of Dr. Ann’s 10-Step Diet: A Simple Plan for Permanent Weight Loss and Lifelong Vitality, says that you are setting yourself up for failure if you insist on setting grandiose, lofty goals. “If you set unattainable goals, such as losing 30 pounds in just a few months, you’re setting yourself up to fail.” It’s better to try to focus on your health and create sensible eating strategies.” Give yourself achievable weight loss goals, if weight loss is your endgame. If you are training for performance, apply the same principle. Try tracking monthly instead of weekly results. It’s a better sample size, and will give you a more accurate picture of what is occurring. Weekly measuring is just rushing it.
Real Time Heart Rate Monitors
And while we are highlighting tracking fitness results, we’d like to talk to you guys about how we are revolutionizing how group training works here at Genetics Training Facilities. Not only do you get access to free-weights, turf-style boot camp floor, and our cardio and strength training machines, but our certified personal trainers utilize real time heart rate monitors with every member of the fitness class to make sure you are at your optimized, fat-burning, heart-healthy levels. This means we can modify individual workouts to tailor them to your needs and preferences. Being able to take advantage of cutting-edge technology like this is exactly the time of thing that will help you take ownership of your fitness goals, and then achieve them.
Keep Good Company
The people with whom we choose to spend our time affect us, whether we realize it or not. If you are around people who like to live fast and eat unhealthily, there’s a good chance you are going to be following their lead in a few weeks’ time. Likewise, if you come to a fitness boot camp in Riverside, you’ll probably meet a few new people who have a similar outlook on life as you. Or, just maybe, you’ll meet some people who inspire you – people who you want to spend more time with. At Genetics Training Facilities, we can’t guarantee that something like that will be your experience, but it’s not of the ordinary either. Wouldn’t you want to hang out with people who are serious about enjoying life the right way? That’s the kind of culture we are constantly seeking to cultivate here at Genetics Training Facilities.
